It’s St Valentine’s Day and, with the cricket season just visible on the horizon, what better time could there be to pose that all-important question….

“What do you love about cricket?”

We asked the Warwickshire Cricket Board and Edgbaston team - here are their Valentine’s Day replies….

  • Errol Simms (Edgbaston Indoor Centre Manager) – “I love cricket because it’s a game for everyone. It’s the closest game I know to life itself. One minute things are going well and the next minute it’s all gone wrong. It only takes one ball to change the situation.”
  • Danny Maskell (WCB Schools Manager) – “I love cricket because it teaches players far more than the sport itself; for example, teamwork, social skills and resilience.”
  • Charlie Greening (WCB Coach) – “I love playing cricket with my mates, and spending time with them at a game.”
  • Amanda Felton (WCB Safeguarding Officer) – “I love the way cricket includes people of all ages. It brings communities together, the able and less able, people from different backgrounds and cultures, all with a common interest.”
  • Ed McCabe (WCB General Manager) – “I love how rewarding cricket can be. After all the practice, sometimes everything comes together and goes really well. When that happens, there’s no better feeling!”
  • Mina Zahoor (WCB Community Participation Officer) – “I love seeing dozens of girls at an after-school club, developing new skills, having a great time – and making a lot of noise!”
  • Callum James (Wicketz Officer) – “I love delivering projects where we see the emphasis on cricket for good, improving the lives of participants.”
  • Gabby Basketter (WCB Women & Girls’ Officer) – “I love seeing girls grow in confidence as they develop as cricketers. I also can’t wait to see women’s cricket at the Commonwealth Games here in Birmingham this summer.”
  • JT (Edgbaston Security Team) – “I love all the friendly people I get to meet through cricket. I just love being here at Edgbaston – even after 36 years!”
  • Shaz (Edgbaston Security Team) – I love the atmosphere at Edgbaston, especially on match days, and also all the amazing volunteers.”
  • Raja Shahzeb (WCB Coach) – “I love how cricket brings different cultures and ages all together, no matter where you are in the world or what your beliefs are. We are all cricket lovers, and we call it a big cricketing family. Cricket keeps us united.”
  • Nita Chagar (WCB Business Support Officer) – “I love the valuable life skills that cricket brings out in my two children. I also love seeing their confidence and competitive streaks emerge when they play in matches.”
  • Zak Sinkinson (WCB Coach) – “I love seeing a whole coaching group of children having fun and participating in the session, regardless of ability.”

The final Valentine’s Day word goes to Andy Owen at the Edgbaston Indoor Centre – “Cricket and love go hand in hand. You can be a good catch and be bowled over!”

Thanks to everyone at Edgbaston who told us what they love about cricket. We can’t wait for the start of the 2022 season.
