Developing Young People – WCB Cricket Activators (2nd June) and Young Cricket Officials (3rd June)

Developing young people is an important goal at the Warwickshire Cricket Board. During the COVID pandemic there have been few opportunities for young people to attend events where they can develop new skills. Getting such courses up and running quickly again is a priority for the WCB.

During May half term there will be a strong focus on young people. Staff from WCB, in partnership with the Warwickshire Association of Cricket Officials, will be running our Cricket Activators and Young Cricket Officials courses. These courses are specifically designed to equip young people with new skills they can use not just in a cricket environment but can also apply more widely in their lives beyond cricket.

Both the Cricket Activators and Young Cricket Officials courses will enable young people to volunteer at cricket clubs, tournaments and festivals. The skills they will develop include leadership, communication, teamwork and innovation, in addition to the technical skills of coaching, scoring, umpiring etc. Skills developed on these courses, and the volunteering opportunities they lead to, also count towards programmes such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award.

More details of the Cricket Activators and Young Cricket Officials courses can be found below. If you are interested in joining either course, there are still a small number of places available. Please contact Alex Roslyn [email protected] or click the links below if you would like to enrol, or to find out more information about future courses.

WCB Cricket Activators Course (2nd June)

The Cricket Activators Course aims to encourage young people to get involved as cricket volunteers. The course will provide the skills and knowledge needed to volunteer in a wide variety of roles in clubs, community and education, such as;

  • Assisting with junior training sessions,
  • Assisting at All Stars & Dynamos club sessions,
  • Registering participants during sessions,
  • Dealing with safety issues,
  • Being a young leader within a club.

Young Cricket Officials

This new programme aims to give 14-18 year olds the key skills and confidence required to umpire and score cricket matches. It is completely free and involves face to face training where young people learn how to umpire and score. As part of the course, they then get the opportunity to put this new knowledge into practice in a match environment. After the course, participants will be ready use their new skills in clubs, schools, festivals and tournaments, whilst also being mentored and supported.

Young Cricket Officials is perfect for 14-18 year olds who are keen to learn more about cricket, help out at their local club/school or learn some valuable skills to use towards a volunteering scheme (such as Duke of Edinburgh).
